6 Health Benefits of Coffee and Side Effects of Too Much Consumption

A recent paper published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows that moderate coffee consumption is directly associated with lowering the risk of death and tremendous health benefits.

I wrote a detailed article on this topic a couple of months ago; here is the title, if you would like to read or recall — New Research Shows a Long-Term Impact of Drinking Coffee.

This article is an extension based on my previous research and especially to start consuming coffee after a long break; as you may know, I am a huge fan of 30 days challenges to build sustainable healthy, and productive habits.

So far, I have completed 18 challenges (30+ days each), and here is the list.

In fact, I did a challenge to drink absolutely no coffee for 30 days. That was one of the hardest challenges, as I used to consume a lot of coffee.

I would also like to point out that I consume only black coffee, and this article is also based on the consumption of black coffee. Personally, I don’t like to add milk or sugar.

Let’s dive in and learn the top 6 health benefits of coffee.

#6 Great for mental health

No one wants to develop a neurodegenerative disease, especially those who have witnessed a family member suffer.

Parkinson’s disease is associated with a decrease in dopamine. Because caffeine increases dopamine levels in the brain, research shows that drinking black coffee lowers your chances of developing Parkinson’s disease.

People who drink coffee regularly have been shown to have a 30% lower risk of developing this disease.

Drinking black coffee may help to keep your brain healthy. It also strengthens brain nerves and improves memory.

#5 A great source to reduce depression

According to research, caffeine prevents brain receptors from binding with a chemical (adenosine), which causes fatigue and depression.

Therefore, people who drink more coffee have higher adenosine concentrations in their blood because the chemical is prevented from binding to these receptors.

#4 Support liver health

Is your life worth living? It all depends on the liver. — William James

The liver is a vital organ that quietly works to keep our bodies healthy.

Black coffee may help in the reduction of harmful liver enzymes found in the blood.

Coffee may help reduce the risk of liver cancer, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis.

#3 Great nutritional source

According to this article, drinking at least 2-cups of coffee every day can improve mental health significantly.

And according to Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, drinking merely two cups of coffee per day had a 32% lower prevalence of self-reported depression than those who did not.

According to this research paper (Coffee Consumption and the Risk of Depression in a Middle-Aged Cohort…), a study of 14,000 Spanish university students, those who drank at least 4 cups of coffee per day were 20% less likely to be diagnosed with clinical significant depression.

#2 Reduce the risk of cancer

Coffee consumption also helps to lower your risk of colorectal cancer.

Drinking 4–5 cups (daily) of black coffee reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 15% and liver cancer by 40%.

And given that liver and colorectal cancer are the third and fourth leading causes of death worldwide, this is significant.

Coffee also reduces your risk of skin cancer by about 20%, especially in women.

#1 Reduce inflammtion

Depressed people have higher blood levels of inflammation-related proteins than non-depressed people, and suicidal ideation has also been linked to inflammation.

According to this research paper, coffee’s anti-inflammatory properties are linked to less depression.

Here are some of the side effects of black coffee

We all know anything over a certain threshold is toxic, including good foods. Here are some of the side effects of drinking too much black coffee:

  • Excessive coffee consumption before bedtime may disrupt your sleep cycle. Therefore, I have some basic rules, no coffee/caffeine
  • after 6 PM. no, no.
  • Anxiety or stress may result from drinking too much black coffee.
  • Caffeine in coffee can cause hyperacidity.
  • Too much coffee inhibits your body’s ability to absorb minerals from your daily diet.

The bottom line

I believe humans get a lot done, not because we’re smart, but because we have thumbs so we can make coffee. — Flash Rosenberg

Coffee is a popular beverage, at least in North America (coffee is not that common in Asia, especially India/Pakistan, but the chai).

You can easily find a lot of data on coffee, mainly on why coffee works as an energy booster and the health benefits of coffee, especially weight loss and mental health.

I drink 2–3 cups of black coffee each day. I am a huge fan of Columbian coffee; sometimes, I buy from Costco, but most of the time at Amazon. Here is the coffee; if you would like to try it, Green Mountain Coffee — Keurig K-cup.
