It’s not clickbait; therefore, I will jump right on it.
Background
I joined Medium on Nov 19th, 2021 without knowing that there is a thing to become a Top Writer or even possible to monetize the stories. All I wanted to share my thoughts with the world based on my conversations with colleagues, family, and friends.
Niche
Niche is the most important part of selecting to become a top writer. Why? Because a niche is going to determine the competition to become a Top Writer at Medium
For Example
When you tag a keyword at the end of your story right before publishing it, you see a number attached to that keyword.
That number means the number of stories already published on Medium based on the keyword.
How to become a Top Writer in a week
After setting the background, it’s time to give you the magic formula to become a Top Writer.Try to produce at least one article per day and use the 5 tags you have expertise in.
Tags consistency is the key
Focus on your tags’ consistency, and make sure to use the same tags for every story you are going to produce in the next 7 days.
That will help the reader and the Medium team that you have expertise in that domain.
Power of social media
This is optional but it can help your story to give an extra booster to get more views. You can share your published story link on Pinterest, Twitter, Linkedin, Quora, and Reddit. I know Medium does not pay you for external readers but the external views will help to trigger the Medium algorithm to distribute your story more internally.
Tip: Do not underestimate the power of Pinterest. That’s one of the best sources to get external traffic.

After doing all that hard work, you may get notified and receive an email like this: Congrats.
Top Writer Tag benefits
I don’t think there is any monetary benefit to becoming a top writer. It’s a way to show your expertise and maybe gain more readers.
We can consider Top Writer as an achievement that appeared next to your name to show that you are the subject matter expert in that domain.
Honestly, there is no formula instead to produce content constantly. Make sure to pay attention to consistency, and quality to keep readers spending more time.
On a serious note, I started to write on Medium on Dec 9th 2021, and pledged to produce at least one story every day for the next 100 days. Since Dec 9th, I did not miss a single day to publish at least one story. However, I do not write on the weekends.
For example, I mostly spend my weekend: hiking, family & friends, chores, etc. However, I spend at least 120 minutes per day reading/writing on Medium on weekdays. All the best in your Medium journey.
