According to a recent survey, one in three Americans has a side hustle, and one in four is planning to start. All side hustles begin to provide an extra income on top of full-time earnings.
There are so many side hustles that can be done from home based on your experience and interests, here are just the 7 basic side hustles that you may want to try in your spare time.
1. Dog Day Minding (walking, sitting, …)
Combine dog minding with your fitness routine. People will be happy to pay for you to mind their dog every day while they work and let him run around your garden; get about 4 dogs together on leashes and let them play at your house.
Make sure the dogs get on, as you don’t want any fights! It’s an excellent ongoing work, and the dog creche will continue to grow.
2. Tutoring
If you are a student at college, you can offer some tutoring to school students. Pick your best subjects and advertise them. I used to teach math/stat for $20 per hour.
Parents will pay for this expertise as only someone young who has recently completed school truly understands the syllabus. If you are patient, this is the perfect side hustle.

3. Online Training Courses
If you are recent graduates looking for a job or have some spare time and expertise, offer your skills by creating an online course on Teachable, Udemy, or Skillshare.
Over the last couple of years, this has been one of the best side hustles from home. Topics to aim for are:
- Typing
- Computing
- Responsible service of alcohol
- Life coaching
- Creative writing
Look at government tenders online to see what they are looking for; you need never leave the house.
4. Sewing and Ironing
If you are good at sewing, offer a service from home. Mending is an area people always look for, as well as bespoke clothing made from a pattern.
Clients can leave the clothing with you and pick it up later.
If you are not getting enough work, branch into a shirt laundry and ironing service for business people and offer a same-day turnaround for five shirts or more, you will always be busy.
5. Music
Music is life itself. — Louis Armstrong
Teach the guitar or ukulele from home after school or even the recorder and chanter depending on your ability.
6. Floral Arrangements
If you have a garage, set up a florist business from home, advertise on Facebook and make unique floral arrangements for your clients.
Going to a flower shop is very expensive, so working from home is an excellent side hustle; you will realize that there is a huge markup when flowers are sold to the public.
If you are good with flowers, you will have many clients who pay well.
7. Cooking
A recipe has no soul, you, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe. — Thomas Keller
Suppose you are a whizz in the kitchen and set up a business baking cakes and cookies.
Children’s birthday parties are always highly competitive, and if you get a handle on ‘age birthday cakes,’ that is really hard work but lucrative!
You will become the local expert, and everyone will order from you.
Nearly all these basic side hustles from home have the potential to be ideal, flexible career choices!
